Geek Community Fallacies (v.2)

Years ago, Michael Suileabhain-Wilson (great guy!) helped our community tremendously by enumerating Five Geek Social Fallacies. These were, as he explained, exaggerated versions of notions that are, in themselves, reasonable. They were also a product of their times: Aimed at questions of small groups, physical friendships, and how to organize real-world activities. This is an attempt to produce a similar taxonomy for some of the ways these fallacies play out on a larger scale. It is almost certainly incomplete. I hope that feedback and discussion can help create something worth posting in some more permanent and accessible way. With that context, on to the Geek Community Fallacies (in comments):

Shelving my dice now. I seem to have mislaid some of them. Feel sad.

EDIT: Geek Social Fallacies Geek Community Fallacies

I'd like to discuss whether the Geek Social Fallacies can be usefully rewritten from their original formulation (in which the perspective was on a small group of friends characterized by individual relationships) to a broader formulation that can give insight into how this matrix of dysfunction shapes a larger community. Here's my first try, and I absolutely welcome suggested improvements, and discussions of what kind of consequences these rules would have:

(1) Ostracizers are evil => Members in good standing may not be corrected (consequence: Community policing must begin with invalidation)

(2) Friends accept me as I am => The community shall have no shared minimum standard of good behavior, except as laid out in the GSF

(3) Friendship before all => Setting personal boundaries is unacceptable

(4) Friendship is transitive => Any stranger who identifies into the group must be extended trust.

(5) Friends do everything together => Recognizing diversity in viewpoint and preference is prejudice.

I'm not thrilled with all of the formulation (though I think #2 and #3 are pretty spot on). Help me refine?

A bit over a year ago, I produced a rough video that demonstrated the basic tools associated with the open source layout program, Scribus. Since then, I have continued to hear that it was useful for people, so I decided to spend a couple hours to compile a basic template for laying out RPG's. Please feel free to grab the template under the link below, and share this widely!

Call the Midwife - how to rpg that?

Call the Midwife - how to rpg that? I really like the Call the Midwife BBC serie. I find it very moving, gently touching very humane and deep and important subjects. But with every episode I watch, I try to solve this: how to get these emotions AND these subjects around a rpg table. I know of no ttrpg that accomplish this. Sure, I can with my fellow players collaboratively invent and tell such stories with some story-games tricks, but that always prevents me (up till now) to really feel, enjoy and be moved by the story. How do I do that?

Yesterday there was that shitstorm.

Yesterday there was that shitstorm. It probably isn’t over yet, but I want to write about yesterday. I wasn’t on my best conduct. I actually picked up some feces, and throwed it farther away, falling prey to the old “if you don’t do anything, you’re actually supporting that shitty behavior I accuse the other party of”. This isn’t right. I understand the reasoning when one is witnessing a direct act occurring before their own eyes, with enough contest to understand without doubts that what is occurring is clearly wrong. But that doesn’t apply to a years old feud, where I have only a very partial knowledge of what happened and what is happening, where everything is very muddy, so muddy that everyone involved – and even some passersby – are so covered in mud. There I have no right to intervene, nor do I have a duty to. I have no duty, no legitimacy and no ability to investigate what happened, to interpret what I find and finally to pass any kind of judgment other than “well, they all look quite muddy to my eyes”. No duty, no legitimacy, no ability. That’s why I’ll keep silent, and I won’t accept to be accused of thus helping any side.

Amazons

Amazons

My newest game, Amazons, is out! It's in Worlds Without Master Issue 11, available now.

Amazons is a Sword & Sorcery rpg for two players and two or more GMs. The two players play two Amazons, devoted friends and traveling companions, and the GMs share responsibility for the troubled and perilous situation they find themselves in.

Last time we played, the amazons fought off a sea monster's spawn, yelled at some Vikings, and placated the dawn-goddess of an otherwise forgotten pantheon.

I created the game to celebrate Tanith Lee and the essential point of view that her stories brought to the Sword & Sorcery genre.

Check it out if you want, and if you like good new Sword & Sorcery stories, comics, and games, you should be following Worlds Without Master anyway.

As always, I'm happy to answer any questions you have. If you've read the game, what do you think?

It's been a very long journey to get to this point. From playing games with friends in the 90s, to talking about games in the aughts, to getting the crazy idea that I could write them in 2005 with Breaking the Ice. The world has changed, so it's been wonderful to have this chance to update and re-visit them in light of so much amazing design that has happened since 2005.

Hope you enjoy!

RPG rules are like bicycles.

RPG rules are like bicycles. At the start, when you’re learning to cycle, you have to concentrate on keeping your balance, pedal, managing the gears. Later on you’ll be able to enjoy the landscape, only occasionally needing to burden yourself with cycling details, like when planning a ride or when the derailleur does that funny noise. Good bicycles take you to farther places faster. But there are very nice places that are only reachable by car, train, plane, or by walking, climbing or spelunking. And trying to reach them with a bicycle can be much harder.

H.P. Lovecraft teams up with Nikola Tesla, Amelia Earhart, Albert Einstein, Harry Houdini, Sonia Greene, Marie Curie, Babe Ruth, Josephine Baker, Jack Dempsey, Charlie Chaplin,Clara Bow, Kandinsky, Trilussa, Keaton, the list goes on and on. So many joined the fight against the Cthulhu Mythos creatures who invaded our world in the 1920's. But this is no ordinary Call-back to Cthulhu style TTRPG, this is as much about the history and personalities of the notable figures alive in this exciting era. You can play as any well-known person from the 1920's, mix up history, have fun! Or create an unique character from scratch to join the fight.

❝Apocalypse World divvies the conversation up in a strict and
pretty traditional way. The players’ job is to say what their
characters say and undertake to do, first and exclusively; to say
what their characters think, feel and remember, also exclusively;
and to answer your questions about their characters’ lives and surroundings. Your job as MC is to say everything else: every-
thing about the world, and what everyone in the whole damned
world says and does except the players’ characters.❞ [Baker, David Vincent, Apocalypse World. Greenfield (Massachusetts, USA), Lumpley Games.]

Pendragon in the Old West

* Art Pendrake, sharpshooter, US marshal, then sheriff and landowner, heir to Utah Pendrake
* Gwen Grant, his wife, daughter of wealthy landowner Leo Grant
* Lance Lake, his best friend and peerless shootist
* Guy Wayne, his protégé, leads the Roundtable Riders once Art settles down
* Gal Hadley, the perfect gunfighter
* Old Man Merle, Art’s advisor
* Percy Vale, always a searcher
* Morgan Faye, Art’s half-sister and bitter enemy
* Mortimer Dread, Art’s bastard son

Use Pendragon rules, including personality traits and passions. Replace “father’s class” tables etc with backgrounds, such as lawman, outlaw, cowboy, messenger, etc. Sub out combat skills for the following:

Horsemanship
Knife
Lariat
Revolver
Rifle
Saber
Shotgun

Change Glory to Reputation. Among other things, Reputation adds +1 per 1000 points to efforts to sway groups of people, avoid duels, win over local authorities, and stay alive.

Damage: Knife 3d6, Revolver & Saber 4d6, Shotgun & Rifle 5d6. Crit double damage.
Guns vs DEX, or if a gunfight use gun skill vs gun skill.
