There is only one true city; a place of multiversal trade, cultural exchange, and mixed blood. A place where monsters come to scheme and gods come to die.

Sig: The City Between is the nexus of the multiverse. It's a city connected to everywhere, a refuge for the oppressed and a prize for tyrants. It's a place where culture is at the forefront, with diverse faiths and tongues struggling for space in the crowded metropolis. It's a city of families, both whole and broken.

Sig is also a launching point, allowing fools and heroes to venture into the eternal planes of existence. Each plane is made of concepts, of elements, or of ideals that resonate through the entire 'verse. The planes impose their own Beliefs on Sig, and on the infinite primal worlds beyond.

Each of the planes is also home to unique peoples, from the Giants of the Elemental Plane of Stone to the Wyrms of the Ideological Plane of Destruction. The 36 Plots

The 36 Plots

All dramatic situations are simply retellings of these archetypal stories:

1. A man takes out a home insurance policy without noticing that it doesn't cover snow damage to the roof.
2. A woman's cellphone battery runs out, making the coffeeshop's free wifi nothing but a cruel joke.
3. A Scotsman, a physicist, and a horse walk into a bar.
4. A woman asks her boss to leave an hour early on Friday to pick up her mother from the airport.
5. Two brothers disagree on deck-building strategies for a Magic: the Gathering tournament.
6. A woman asks for a non-fat latte. They only have 2%. She figures it's okay.
7. The bachelor party for a man's father just seems kind of awkward.
8. A woman realizes she forgot her bus tickets, and has to pay the full fare in change.
9. A man asks his friends to help him move. He doesn't tell them he won't get pizza and beer for them.
10. A woman is allergic to mushrooms. She doesn't want them on her pizza, even when she's told she can pick them off.
11. A boy tries to tell his teacher about his Pokémon collection. She is thinking about what she'll have for lunch.
12. A couple's relationship grows tense when they can't agree on the right shade of paint for the bedroom. They come to a compromise.
13. A woman tries to convince her sister-in-law to try a paleo diet.
14. A taxi driver takes a wrong turn with his passenger. He has to circle around the block, costing him part of his tip.
15. A young girl finds an old book in her grandmother's attic. It is a 1952 Sears catalogue.
16. A man tries to decide whether or not to Like one of his ex-girlfriend's Facebook posts.
17. A woman overhears a conversation between two strangers. It may be in German. Or Russian. She doesn't know either language, but the people definitely look foreign.
18. An old man discovers that he's had the pen he was looking for in his shirt pocket all along.
19. A college student begins to suspect that lifehacks are just ways for middle-class people to feel like they're poorer than they are.
20. A middle-aged woman at the airport cannot remember whether or not she cleaned the cat's litter box. She did.
21. A student is angry that someone reverted his changes to the Wikipedia article on "The Secrets of Isis."
22. Two sisters cannot agree on whether Brad Pitt is sexier than Ryan Gosling. One of them is wrong.
23. A man cannot decide how to answer when a cashier says, "Hi, how are you?"
24. A woman offhandedly mentions her gender on the internet. She soon receives pictures of men's penises.
25. A teenager wonders what it would have been like to grow up in the 90s.
26. A teenager must choose which movie to see at the Cineplex. One of them has subtitles.
27. A child finds a quarter, two dimes, and a button behind the couch cushions. He hides them in his room and forgets about them.
28. A girl's knowledge of the Star Wars franchise, including the Expanded Universe novels, both impresses and intimidates a shy boy.
29. A man looks at the takeout menu of a Thai restaurant. He tries to remember the differences between yellow, green, and red curry. He's sure that he wants extra jasmine rice, though.
30. A woman wonders who the strange-looking man is who recently appeared in her office building. He is Todd from the I.T. department.
31. A man reminisces about the time he watched the Expendables 2. He cannot remember whether he watched it alone or with Todd.
32. A woman feels uneasy about a bearded young man wearing a fedora and cargo shorts, but cannot explain why.
33. A man does not feel like himself until he has had his first cup of coffee in the morning.
34. A woman buys her sister-in-law a birthday present. She doesn't tell her that she got airmiles points for it.
35. A baby sneezes. It is alarmed and grows wide-eyed for a few seconds.
36. Cat videos.

Merci !

New game campaign, new dice!

New game campaign, new dice! (this obvioulsy is a very serious matter) But I can't make up my mind. Which set would you pick for a Werewolf: The Apocalypse campaign? In my mind,
red is for rage and blood, black for rage. green or blue for Gaia and purple for Umbra. Silver, of course, for Luna and werewolves. Your choice? Or would you suggest another set?

Starting an "I'm a new GM for [specific system]" post by mentioning how long you've been GMing for.

Every system is different and has different "best practices" for running it. Sure, some of the skills you've picked up from running other games might be applicable to this new system, but only generally. You still have to learn this new system from the ground up, and that often means unlearning practices from other systems. GMing games of D&D f or 30 years doesn't mean all that much when you're starting to run Fate.

Old school.

- Table de relations : https://goo.gl/3pwnF1
- Table de résolution : https://goo.gl/L8VYkq
- Table de retournement de situation : https://goo.gl/LhmHwu

Bon jeu !

I frequently read or hear that rpg are not treated as other games are, that rpger don’t respect the rules as written, change them. Often with undertones of “WTF is wrong with you rpgers, can’t you play the game as designed?” and even sometimes “how dare you call yourself a game designer if you account for that in your rules, give permission to players to change the rules or, worse, give them tools and hints to do so… aren’t you good enough to make these decisions by yourself and stick to them?”

That is not my experience. My experience is that, outside of organised, competitive play, most people change rules when they can. Kids and adults. Right now, I am watching my 8 years old playing the excellent Coco King (I heartily recommend this game) with his two younger siblings. He keeps changing the rules to keep the game fun for everyone. They negotiate rules. This is how games are played for fun, rpg or not.

And that also. Zeitgeist at work. Again.

Please be advised: I'm about to ruin a perfectly good joke by analyzing it.

The joke here is that it places judging people on the basis of spelling, etc., on a par with judging them based on their race, creed, color, or gender. It's a kind of ridiculous comparison, elevating the picayune to be on a par with the grandiose. And it's meant to be a slightly reassuring joke, because the people who are laughing at it do, in fact, often judge people by their use or misuse of language, and while it may feel a bit schoolmarmish at times, it's a profound act of belonging to do so, as well. It makes people happy. (As various XKCD's attest)

But what are we really doing, when we judge people based on their use of language?

One thing that's useful to think about is to realize that a single language (say, English) really consists of dozens, hundreds, even thousands of dialects. "Dialect" isn't a pejorative term; it refers to the use of language among a certain group, which may be different in its lexicon, syntax, phonetics, or any number of other features from other dialects. Dialects are mutually comprehensible – that's what makes them part of the same language – but they can be quite different.

If you're reading this, you probably are fluent in at least two dialects of English without realizing it. One is Modern Standard Written English (MSWE), which is what I'm writing in now; the other is Modern Standard English (MSE), its spoken analogue. You might not have realized that these are actually kind of different, but if you ever look at a verbatim transcription of ordinary speech, even extremely educated speech, you'll see that there are significant patterns of difference: for example, phrases are shorter and have fewer subordinate clauses in MSE. (That's actually true of all spoken dialects relative to all written dialects; it's easier to hold long phrases in mind when you're reading)

Very possibly, you speak other dialects as well, often without realizing that you're code-switching between them depending on whether you're at home or elsewhere. For example, one of the most widespread American dialects is African-American Vernacular English, or AAVE for short, sometimes known as "Ebonic." It's actually one of the most linguistically interesting dialects, because it has grammatical constructs that MSE doesn't have, like a much richer verb structure including habituals ("he be working Tuesdays" == MSE "he often works on Tuesdays") and several different past tenses.

But if someone were to write a post in AAVE – especially if they wrote it to match AAVE phonetics, instead of MSWE spelling and MSE phonetics – it would be the exact sort of thing that gets judged as being "bad English." What's going on here?

"Bad English" implies that there's "Good English," and this kind of linguistic prescription has a name: a prestige dialect. In the UK, the English of southern London became the prestige dialect as London became the increasingly powerful political center of the country during the Elizabethan period; other dialects, no less ancient and shortly before no less respected, came to be seen as the dialects of the masses, of people who didn't have regular ties to the seat of power.

Unsurprisingly, written dialects tend to track prestige dialects closely, since writing has historically been a tool of the educated and powerful. This is sufficiently true that when we see any non-prestige dialect in written form, it looks shocking and odd at first: until very recently, especially with the advent of the Internet and mass writing (as opposed to mass literacy), we almost never saw it.

When we talk about how speaking "proper English" will get you further in life, what we mean is that by being able to speak and write in the prestige dialect, you can identify yourself as being part of that social group which can do that – that is, a group which regularly hears and speaks it, and regularly interacts with the powerful whose speech defines it. (Prestige speech is, almost by definition, the speech of the powerful)

Another way to say it – one that's more shocking to American ears – is that speaking or writing in a prestige dialect is a performance of class. It's a way of demonstrating that you have membership in this grouping.

If someone can do this but doesn't, they're marked as acting "beneath themselves," failing to live up to a class standard. If someone can't do it at all, they're "uneducated" – which is to say, they haven't had the day-to-day opportunity and need to speak in the prestige dialect.

So to go back to the original joke, this is meant to be funny because judging people on the basis of "spelling, grammar, punctuation, and sentence structure" appears at first to be ludicrously harmless, a powerless method of judging people with friendly ribbing underneath. But if we pry it open a bit, what we're really talking about is judging people on their ability to perform membership in a social class. When it's aimed at people who are unambiguously within that social class, it may indeed have that nature of harmless ribbing; but when it isn't, when people say things like "you must be at least this smart to use the Internet," what it really is is saying "you must be part of this social class to belong here."

It's actually more sinister than it sounds.

If you'd like to read more about some of these subjects, some good places to start are:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prestige_(sociolinguistics)
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/African_American_Vernacular_English

(I'll avoid giving a h/t for the image unless the earlier poster asks me to, since I'm quite certain that this poster had nothing nearly this sinister in mind, and that it was almost certainly aimed at people for whom this would not constitute "punching down." My apologies for turning an innocent post into a linguisto-political analysis.)

Also, that. (Kneeing myself firmly in the chin.)

One of things I want to talk about today is GMing. If you aren’t a tabletop RPG nerd, what I’m talking about is being the person in charge of ‘running’ a tabletop game. There are various titles for that depending on the game, from Dungeon Master to Game Master to Narrator to (my favorite) Hollyhock God. What all those titles have in common is that they describe the person who describes and sometimes even creates the world in which the player’s characters reside and act.

And it is a skill that is actually a portfolio of diverse skills. Depending on the game you’re playing, you’re probably going to have to get comfortable with math (and sometimes higher math), narrative structure and plot, characterisation, worldbuilding, politics and organization. You have to learn to herd cats, to get your players at the table. You have to learn to act a little. And cultivate a good poker face. You have to learn your players’ personalities, likes and dislikes to give them the best gaming experience. And having learned all these things, you have to learn to throw everything out the window and improvise your ass off when (and it’s always when, not if) your players throw you a curve.

For me, there is an almost spiritual feeling about sitting down to the gaming table. I’ve been doing it for 30 years and there is a ritual and weight to it. There is a wonderful moment, right before things get started, where I look around the table and try to read my player’s moods. Who has had a bad week? Who’s in a good mood? Is there anticipation to get started right away, or do I need to ease them into the game? Should we start with an action scene, or something light and work our way into the conflict? Making those choices, I take a sip of my drink, glance down at my notes, take my dice in hand (even if I don’t need them right that second) and the game is on.

It is a singular and unique pleasure to be able to take people out of their lives for a few hours at a time. To become lost, together, in a fantastic world of magic or warp drives or superheroes. To see the unguarded emotions on people’s faces as they confront the challenges of the game and do their level best to save the day. Or at least keep their heads above water. Making sure each player gets time to shine and their character gets the spotlight for a while. Being able to evoke emotional responses and to have my players surprise me with not just their character’s actions, but how well they live those characters sometimes.

Those are the moments when I lose myself. Or perhaps find myself. And there is no other kind of entertainment that comes close to roleplaying when it comes to letting you get to those heights of shared imagination.

We don’t talk about it much, as gamers, largely because self-examination in a group can be obnoxious and because our modern society has a problem with admitting that any any kind of love exists, outside eros and storge, which is to say romantic love and familial. But GMing is, in some ways, an expression of agape and philia. The love of one’s fellows and a kind of spiritual love, for your shared experience and one another.

The fact that the experience isn’t real isn’t all that important. Most of the ‘best’ memories you have with friends and family are already mythologized and embroidered until what everybody remembers has little to do with the truth. Gaming memories are just that taken a little further, into the worlds that were never really there.

What matters is that there is a kind of service to others in GMing. My pleasure in running a game is almost entirely reflected. Am I making my players happy? That makes me happy. Are they experiencing a second of awe and wonder at something? I feel it with them, along with the pride of having helped get them there. Do they hate my villains and love my supporting NPCs? There is no higher praise than that. GMing is the illusion of control over an illusionary universe, freeing your players and yourself to step outside themselves and live, just for a few hours, in worlds where anything is possible and everybody gets to be the protagonist.

That is a powerful, wonderful shared experience and one of my favorite things in life.

So, a friend shared this over on the bookface. Had to bring it over here. Beautiful people in gorgeous reenacting gear.

It hits all the buttons, it does.

Not actually "porn" though there are some 16th century nude paintings in the header image.

Attention Folks Interested in Tabletop Roleplaying Games & Design

Since school is starting for a lot of folks, myself included, I thought it might a good time to have another one of these posts. Especially timed for a day when I expect to meet quite a few new voices in the real world.

There is a thriving RPG community posting and participating on G+ that you cannot see unless you start following the folks involved. If you are at all interested in talking about RPGs here, I want to help you follow and be followed!

How to Use This Post:

Whether you're budding and new or old and tired, casually interested or a die-hard theorist, feel free to post in the comments below and introduce yourself. Are you new to G+? Are you an old hand at this? Do you have a very specific set of skills? Are you just generally curious?

If you are at all interested in tabletop roleplaying game design, feel free to follow any and/or all of the folks commenting below. Comment below if you want such a collection of people to follow you.

For my part, I'm going to be pointing all the new folk I meet at school this week to this post. Feel free to do the same.

So, the thing is, even in traditional RPGs, I don't game for story.

So, the thing is, even in traditional RPGs, I don't game for story. I'm pretty transparent about it: if you look at my work, my preferred points of focus (characters, problem-solving, exploring, roleplaying, emotion, tone, free of narrative goal, focused on the subjective fictional perspective) get the love. Story just isn't something I want in a game. I don't want it. You want it? Awesome. I don't. You use some of my stuff to pursue it? How cool is that? Rock on! I don't. But whenever this comes up, the response ranges from some level of surprise or disbelief to ... recommendations for games focused on story, often accompanied by the declaration that I obviously, totally want story and it's just some kind of semantic confusion. It's pretty much this scene from My Big Fat Greek Wedding, where I'd be the vegetarian.

Partie d’AW de vendredi… Partie frustrante car trop courte.

Partie d’AW de vendredi… Partie frustrante car trop courte.

If you have to say something about ttrpg to rpg-er, say it.

If you have to say something about ttrpg to rpg-er, say it. Don’t preface it with preparatory messages on what is a ttrpg or historical context is a tar pit and you won’t get to your main point. It might be proper form in some circles, but it is useless and risks building unnecessary friction. (Except, obviously, if what you want to address is the definition or history of ttrpg)
