Les immersions sont des compétences.

  1. I would argue that the act of immersing oneself is a skill.

  2. That what I mean, recognising at the same time that there are different kinds of immersion, necessitating multiple skills.

  3. How do you distinguish between different kinds of immersion?

  4. Mainly because different persons can immerse with more or less difficulty, or not at all, at different shades or orientation of a game session. I can immerse pretty easily when I am prepping a game as gm, or while going. As a player I can immerse rather deeply in my character's thoughts and feelings and perceiving the game world through their senses. Bu as à payer,t I am clumsy when it comes to "let's build a story together, let's generate drama" (but I am learning). I know players who flow easily from one to another, others who can immerse in the drama stuff but not in their characters. Also all these immersed states feel different.

  5. Okay that helps, thanks for the clarification.

When you're immersing as GM, whether prepping or actively GMing, what would you say your experience is like if you are immersed? What does it feel like?

  6. It's a bit difficult to describe know, because a part of it is a modified state of awareness. Both prep and running game immersion are intense but easy, “natural”, concentration. A sense that things come naturally, not effortlessly but the effort is painless.

For prepping, I have different modes of preparation, with different kinds of immersion. One is daydreaming, where I have an acute “sensualization” (like visualization, but for other senses too) of setting, scenescapes, characters, situations (emotional, strategical, moral…), conversations, rules feelings… Another one is more intellectual, building the game, being acutely aware and visualizing possibilities for the coming game, remembering things from past games. My note taking degrades a bit, but I have the impression that I memorize some things at a more unconscious level – that is I don’t really remember them, I can’t recall them, but they seem to surface at the right time. Not reliably, though. In both cases I usually lose a bit of my sense of time.

While running a game I used to lose my sense of time, sometimes emerging and witnessing how much time went by, but now I keep track of time while immersed. Nowadays my immersed thoughts run around situation building, character highlighting, managing the spotlight for players and getting things to run smoothly. It feels a bit like juggling, kind of checking on and operating/directing with a light hand a bunch of autonomous, integrated processes. Afterwards, I have a vivid memory of what happened, much better than my usual “register what happened” memory, but it is fleeting. I have to consciously access it and take notes, because I will forget most of it as it tends to happen to dreams.

  7. This sentence, "immersions are skills" makes me progress.
    A. Immersions are skill if you consider a skill as a process you can improve by practicing or learning.
    B. The sentence "immersions are skills" makes a player responsible of her own immersion.
    C. If you consider immersions as part of the RPG fun, maybe you can disagree with "immersions are skills". You will rather think that each kind of immersion is the product of how you perceive a roleplaying performance (yours or other players'). Fun and/or perception can be seen as an effortless attitude. Ergo : Quality or intensity of immersion would be due to quality or intensity of roleplaying performance. So the research of reaching immersion is left to games or gaming techniques.
    D. If immersions are skills, how can we improve this skills ? (different immersions, different techniques). Is it desirable ? Again, debate about fun, effort, involvement.

  8. A. Certainement !

    C. "Fun and/or perception can be seen as an effortless attitude." je pense que c'est se tromper.

    D. Pratique, pratique, pratique. Observation, analyse, essais, amélioration, vérification.

  9. Vu sur Jdr.hypotheses.org :

Bowman, S. L., & Standiford, A. (2016). Enhancing Healthcare Simulations and Beyond: Immersion Theory and Practice. International Journal of Role-Playing, (6), 12‑19.

This paper applies six major categories of immersion theory to health care simulation: immersion into activity, game, environment, narrative, character, and community.
